1. What is the first thing you do every morning?
When I’m home. I get up and feed my dog, Maude.
2. What was the moment you felt most the most broke (penniless)?
Sean Combs once gave me a hundred dollar bill back in ’95. While I
was dj’ing in NY nightclubs and was still Puff Daddy. I framed and
hung it above my turntables for a while—this being around the
beginning of Bad Boy, and Puff was a sort of hero to me. Then after
about six months, one day I was starving and literally couldn’t find
enough change around the house to buy a slice of pizza. So I took
Puffy’s private Benjamin down off the wall and took it to Joe’s Pizza on Bleeker. Epilogue…I told him this story recently and he (sweetly)
made a grand gesture out of giving me a $100 bill out of his walIet to
take the symbolic place of the one I spent. The next day, I left my
ATM card at a friend house and had to break the new $100 to get,
to the airport. Oh well.
3. What is the one book that changed your life?
I don’t know if any book has ever changed my Iife. Maybe the Stevie
Wonder Piano Book. I’ve learned some amazing chords from there
that I play again and again. Literary-wise, my favorite two books are Joyce’s Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Michael Chabon The Amazing Adventure of Kavalier and Clay.
4. What is your best karaoke song?
None. I’m shit at karaoke because somewhere deep down inside I kind of think I can sing (and I can’t really). So I try to take it sort of seriously and there’s nothing more boring than watching someone give a middling, humorless karaoke performance.
5. What is the most important thing you ever lost?
I’ve lost three vintage Rolexes in the past six months. I’ve given up on trying to wear one.
6. What is the one biggest goal you have not accomplished?
I never thought I would have a change to do half the shit that I’ve been doing so I can’t really say there are any outstanding boxes to tick. That being said, it’s not like I won three grammies and sat on my ass celebrating for a few weeks—I went straight back to work. So it’s nice to have achievements and accomplishments. But they don’t change what I do or why I do it.
7. If someone Googled you, what would they learn?
That “Mark has been added to the Zoo Thousand and Eight Festival line-up. The festival takes place in Kent from the 4th to the 6th of July. More info and tickets are…”
