(Writer Indigo Clarke)
We here at Starworks always like to introduce cool new talent when it arrives fresh on our shores. Case in point: Indigo Clarke. I met her through Nicki Bidder in London who ran Dazed & Confused for 8 years, so when Nicki told me “you gotta meet this girl”, I left my hectic desk to go grab a greasy bite in the hood. It turns out Indigo is a cool chick. Her writing is clever and unique. Here’s a few questions with the newly minted Manhattanite.
Which mags do you contribute to?
I am Fashion Features Editor for Lula Magazine UK, Editor at Large for Oyster Magazine AUS, Contributing Features Editor for Russh Magazine AUS, Correspondent for Harper’s Bazaar AUS and write features for AnOther Magazine UK, Plastique Magazine UK and The Melbourne Age Newspaper… as well as a few other bits and pieces.
As a writer (and editor), explain what you’re drawn to? What is your “beat” and how do you pinpoint who you will write about?
I am so inspired by ingenuity and authenticity – the people who experiment and go against prevailing trends to create innovative fashion, music, film, design and art that speaks to people in a unique and meaningful way. So, I am always looking out for inventive, interesting people from all disciplines to write about; they can be talented friends or emerging artists and designers I meet out and about or stumble upon through research – or amazing, established leaders in the creative field that I admire and feel very lucky to meet and interview.
Any bigger dreams or aspirations you have not accomplished yet?
Secretly, I’d love to write a book or screenplay, but I don’t see that happening any time soon! Oh, and of course to write for the The New York Times!
I know you just moved to New York, so what is your plan of attack here in the States — what is your dream assignment?
Plan of attack in NYC – to make everyday a holiday. Even with loads of writing work I feel like I’m on an endless safari in this town – having ridiculous amounts of burgers, fries and margaritas, and managing to make work not feel like work. Dream assignment would be to make my teenage dreams come true and interview the Beastie Boys, Robert Smith or Johnny Depp! Being sent to a tropical island to write a travel story wouldn’t be too bad either…
