The new issue of Frank Magazine (a quarterly), is launching tomorrow night. Issue 36 is called “Erotica” by guest curator Lysa Cooper, a global muse and stylist extraordinaire (see Rhianna, Mos Def, etc.)
I will have the honor of manning the turntables (along with DJ Belinda) tomorrow night at this classic Lysa Cooper reunion. Did I mention its the 10th Anniversary issue as well?
If you don’t know Lysa, she has been in the mix since the ‘80s, wafting through the art scene with friends (ex-roomie) Keith Haring and Francesco Clemente (who contributed an illustration to this issue). She began as a club DJ, ultimately creating her own burlesque infamous night called “Juicy” with DJ Belinda Becker and restauranteur Serge Becker — 3 very well connected New Yorkers still today.
Juicy was “the it place” in the early 90′s New york nightlife. It was also one of the longest standing weekly parties.
Juicy was an amateur strip night but with civilian girls for those who remember New York nightlife 2 decades ago. The DJ’s played a healthy mix of current music back when seminal hip hop bands were exploding… back when it was fun and less “agro”. It was so far back in time that Juicy enabled Drew Barrymore to get her “naughty girl” on when she was breaking free from her kid persona in Hollywood (remember when she stood on Lettermans desk and danced? Her Playboy spread? Or when Poison Ivy came out? God bless Drew. She was our first bad girl who turned film mogul). Other early Juicy spottings were guys like George Clooney, or other classic men coming to see normal hip girls work the pole. It was quite an experiment in nightlife.
Profiled in the New Yorker magazine, writer Hilton Als observed the Juicy party in all its glory. Lysa is “the cynosure of any event”, Hilton wrote. “She looks like an embodiment of the attitude Tina Turner tried to project in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome: menacing but adorable.”
