“Entertaining and even poignant… capture(s) the swan song of haute couture’s most long-standing icon.”
– Natasha Senjanovic, The Hollywood Reporter
The Valentino documentary premiered last Friday in New York’s Film Forum. It is written and directed by Matt Tyrnauer, a longtime Vanity Fair Editor/Writer. The film followed the couture icon for 2 years — in Paris, Rome, London, NY, Gstaad, and aboard Valentino’s yacht. We see intimate moments of his relationship with partner, Giancarlo Giammetti, and see him address a tumultuous time when he was asked about his retirement. Matt’s camera captures Valentino’s love, life, and work from an insiders point of view.
“(An ) affecting, disturbing and hilarious portrait of a till-death-do-us-part relationship.”
– Lee Marshall, Screen International
“Seems at first like pure escapist fun… But the film’s potent, bittersweet undertow makes it one for the ages. It reveals one of the past century’s most elegantly lived lives – and a world that is slipping away even as the camera roll.”
– David Colman, The New York Times Style Magazine
“The luxe, rara avis world of the Italian couturier and fashion designer… fused with wit and self-deprecating humor. With great style and editing, the film captures the deep-ted relationship of two men, one a business genius and one a dressmaker who swept through the sixties on the hems of his delicate, feminine suits and fine evening dresses, favorites of Jackie O and Elizabeth Taylor. (Tyrnauer) took a difficult subject – a fashion brand and its founders – and told the story of how fashion as art has to bend to the winds of commerce and modernity.”
– André Leon Talley, Vogue
